Rug Pad Thickness Guide: 1/8″, 1/4″, or 7/16″?
Once you've picked the type of rug pad (felt vs rubber rug pad), there's one more choice: how thick. It's a small decision that makes a real difference in how a room feels and whether the rug fits where you want it. Here's what thickness actually changes, and how to choose between 1/8″, 1/4″, and 7/16″.
What thickness actually changes
Thickness affects three things — and, notably, not grip:
- Cushion. Thicker pads feel softer and warmer underfoot and do more to protect the rug from wear.
- Profile and clearance. A thicker pad lifts the rug higher, which matters at doorways, under furniture, and anywhere a raised edge could catch a foot or a door.
- Sound. More felt means more dampening of footsteps and echo.
What thickness does not control is how well the pad grips. Grip comes from the rubber, not the height — so a thin pad can hold a rug just as firmly as a thick one.
The three thicknesses
1/8″ — thin and low-profile This is our natural-rubber non-slip pad: a single thin layer of rubber that grips hard floors and stays out of the way. There's minimal cushion here — it's a grip pad. Choose it for runners, entryways, kitchens, flat-woven rugs, and anywhere a thicker pad would lift the rug too high (especially in doorways).
1/4″ — the everyday sweet spot The lighter of our felt-and-rubber pads. You get a noticeable felt cushion and rubber grip without much added height. It's the most versatile choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and most general use — comfortable underfoot, but still low enough to work almost anywhere.
7/16″ — maximum plushness The thicker felt-and-rubber pad, for when comfort is the priority. It's the plushest underfoot and the best at dampening sound, which makes it a favorite in bedrooms and living rooms. Just mind the clearance — at this height you'll want to check that it won't interfere with a door that swings over the rug.

How to choose
- Doorway, hallway, or under a door that swings over the rug → 1/8″ (or 1/4″ at most). Go thin so nothing catches.
- General living spaces → 1/4″. The do-everything choice.
- Bedroom or a room where you want it soft underfoot → 7/16″.
- Runner or kitchen rug you mainly want to stop sliding → 1/8″.
When in doubt between two, go with the thinner one — you rarely regret a pad being too low-profile, but a too-thick pad can turn a doorway rug into a trip hazard.
Does a thicker rug pad grip better?
No — this is the most common thickness myth. Grip comes from the rubber making contact with the floor, not from how thick the pad is. A thin 1/8″ rubber pad locks a rug down just as well as a 7/16″ one. So choose thickness for comfort and clearance, and trust the rubber to handle the grip.
